Stephen's Top 10 Zombie Movies!!

Zombies are certainly a hot commodity in Hollywood right now. We have in theaters currently "Resident Evil 3-D" chewing up the competition at the box office-no pun intended! I have always liked the zombie sub-genre. I really don't know why,but I guess somewhere in me has a soft spot for the undead. Without further ado I present to you my top ten list of the greatest zombie flicks of all time (or at least in my opinion! ) :

1. Night of The Living Dead (1968) This b&w classic isn't the first zombie movie, but it is the film that set the ground work for most other undead films to follow. Director George A. Romero's rules were: Shoot a zombie in the head and they die. They are slow moving and shambling creatures. They have an intense quenching for human flesh. This film was also a mile stone in another way because George Romero cast african-american actor Duane Jones in the lead role of "Ben". This movie still holds up today as a great piece of horror cinema.

2. Dawn of The Dead (1979) Another George A. Romero zombie flick makes my list. Dawn took everything that made "Night" great and expanded on it like a sequel should do. Instead of a couple dozen of the undead surrounding and breaking into a country farmhouse, we now move into the middle of Pittsburgh and have thousands of zombies breaking into a massive shopping mall! When there is no more room in hell the dead shall walk the Earth!

3. Shaun of The Dead (2005) Made by british director Edgar Wright and actor Simon Pegg. This movie is a love letter to the before mentioned Romero classics. Just as many laughs here as there are gut munching. This film also turned actor Simon Pegg into a geek icon. This film did big numbers at the box office and deservingly so. It's intellegent,funny and believe it or not touching!

4. Zombie (1980) The tag line for this cult film from Italian director Lucio Fulci is," We will eat you!"....and yes they do! Zombie or Zombi 2 as it's known in Italy, is a gory roller coaster ride that definetly pulls no punches and throws everything in your face. One of the most memorable scenes in the movie is a shark versus a zombie! Yes you heard that right the director actually got an actor to don zombie makeup and go into the ocean with a live shark and grab it and take a bite out of its underbelly!! Just watch this movie!

5. Evil Dead 2 (1987) A Sam Raimi masterpiece and the film that made actor Bruce Campbell the b-movie icon that he is today. This film doesn't really have traditional zombies per se. They are possessed undead whom don't really have a hunger for flesh but want to kill us and take our souls back with them to some ancient unnamed dimension for eternal torment. The cinematography is some of the most innovative and original that you will ever see and has been copied multiple times in horror movies but never with as much effect as this classic horror film. Hail to the king baby!

6. Dead Alive (1994) Known as Braindead throughout Europe and most of the world. This gory gem is made by Mr. Lord Of The Rings himself, Peter Jackson! Dead Alive is without a doubt the goriest zombie movie ever put to celluloid. Shot in New Zeiland for a very low budget this film has many memorable characters and crazy scenes that have to be seen to be believed. The most memorable is when the lead character takes on a zombie horde in his house by using a lawn mower!

7. Return Of The Living Dead (1985) This dark comedy is an "unoffical" sequel to Night of the Living Dead. This zombie flick has many firsts for zombie movies. First the zombies can talk. Second the zombies can run. Third these zombies don't die by a bullet in the head. You have to either completely incinerate them or take them out with a massive electrical jolt. The zombies in this movie are just as memorable or more so than the human cast. Two of the most memorable zombies are a naked punk rock girl and a toxic waste soaked ghoul known as "The Tarman".

8. 28 Days Later (2004) Many horror fans argue that this isn't a zombie movie. I say it is. We have a virus that turns people into ravenous flesh eaters that grunt and groan. To me that qualifies as a zombie! Director Danny Boyle made this movie feel like a documentary with a very rough realism to it. Ignore the sequel and stick with the original.

9. Zombieland (2009) This movie runs neck and neck with "Shaun" as being the greatest horror comedy ever. Woody Harrelson plays zombie ass kicker extrordinare Tallahasee. There are also the very funny and cool "rules" that are put on display for the audience to know the do's and dont's with the undead.

10. Dead Snow (2010) This import is from Sweden. The setting is a remote cabin located in the snowy Alps. Nazi zombies are the protagonists here and they are some of the most bad ass zombies you have ever seen! Many great set pieces throughout the picture. This movie also has what I believe is a first for horror movies: the geek gets laid!! This movie is subtitled and may scare some away,but I say no! Watch this movie because it is too damn fun to pass up!
